APRIL 2023

Dear NBB Community,

I hope everyone is having a great month of April!  Below you will find the April newsletter. I would again like to thank Tina and Joann for their time and effort in putting this together. The newsletter will evolve as we find how best to use this resource to communicate with everyone in the department and celebrate successes, discoveries, and inventions. We are also hoping to highlight what we do when we are not in the lab—your hobbies. I know so many of you have pretty amazing things going on outside of work and it would be wonderful to hear about them, share a picture, etc. Who knows, maybe you will find some like-minded friends to join you as well (mountain biking anyone?). We will be sending out an email for you to answer some fun questions so please don't be shy! Please also send us things to share! Lastly, I wish you all the best for the Spring Quarter, which will hopefully bring some better spring-like weather. I love the rain, but it has kept us off the trails, so bring on the sun!

Warm Regards,

Marcelo A. Wood, Ph.D.
Chair of Department of Neurobiology and Behavior
UCI School of Biological Sciences

NEWS & HIGHLIGHTS

Our very own faculty group have developed a new mouse model that could help us understand Alzheimer’s disease better. READ MORE
Newly formed memories are spontaneously reactivated during sleep, leading to their strengthening. This reactivation process can be manipulated by reinstating learning-related stimuli during sleep, a technique termed targeted memory reactivation. Numerous studies have found that delivering cues during sleep improves memory for simple associations, in which one cue reactivates one tested memory. However, real-life memories often live in rich, complex networks of associations. READ MORE

New memories are not quarantined from each other when first encoded; rather, they are interlinked with memories that were encoded in temporal proximity or that share semantic features. By selectively biasing memory processing during sleep, here Dr. Eitan Schechtman-Drayman test whether context influences sleep consolidation. READ MORE

For many years, Physics education has centered around physics core concepts, and other disciplines have followed suit. However, neuroscience core concepts had yet to be identified. Dr. Audrey Chen Lew and her collaborators recently identified Neuroscience Core Concepts using an empirical approach involving over 100 neuroscience educators. Their results were recently published in the leading journal for biology education research. READ MORE

WELLNESS WITH GUZOWSKI

Mindfulness and the Present Moment (on Kauai)

In the coming months and years, I look forward to exploring ways to increase mental wellbeing together as a department, in part through activities planned by the NBB Wellbeing Group. I used to think of mental propensities as being static, but it is now known that traits such as happiness can be learned skills. As neuroscientists, this should seem obvious to us all, but it typically is not—it wasn’t to me until the past few years. READ MORE
