OCTOBER 2023

Dear Neurobiology & Behavior Community,

I hope everyone is having a great start to the Fall Quarter. For me personally the Fall Quarter is my busiest time of the year as chair, running my lab, and also teaching.  The teaching component is amazing as it is demanding yet exhilarating.  I co-teach a course called Bio93, which is a freshman introductory cell biology course, with Drs. Kim Green and Ian Smith (Dr. Jorge Busciglio usually teaches with us but is on sabbatical this year). Every year we teach about 1000+ undergraduate freshman, which are mostly Bio Sci Majors. Every year they remind me why a profession in science is fun!  The questions they ask and the excitement they demonstrate for learning biology always regenerates my own passion for biology and research.  I share this because I’m very grateful for that experience that comes every Fall Quarter, even when my work load is at its highest every year. It charges my batteries. The only downside is I can’t get a coffee at Starbucks anymore, but perhaps that is a good thing.

Warm Regards,

Marcelo A. Wood, Ph.D.
Chair of Department of Neurobiology and Behavior

DEPARTMENT UPDATES

NeuroBlitz

NeuroBlitz has been a tradition in the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior since 2006. Typically, this seminar series meets 2x per month during the academic school year, featuring 3 graduate student speakers. Unlike other programs on campus, NeuroBlitz remains organized and coordinated by the graduate students, allowing for the control of their own professional development. Ultimately, NeuroBlitz serves as an opportunity to develop one’s communication skills with the support of all members within the NBB department. LEARN MORE
